The doctoral programme is primarily aimed at those who intend to develop advanced research in Distance Education and eLearning, thus contributing to the deepening of knowledge in the area and addressing answers to the new needs of digital transformation, virtualisation and hybridisation of educational processes. Its potential recipients are professionals linked to both primary and secondary schools, higher education institutions, researchers, professional schools, publishers, content producers and municipalities, among others.

The objectives of the doctoral programme are the following:

  • To develop advanced research in the fields of Distance Education and eLearning (EDeL), according to international academic standards of quality and integrity;
  • To promote theoretical and instrumental competences in research in Distance Education and eLearning, through the use of diverse research methodologies and in accordance with the European Goals for Responsible Research and Innovation;
  • To prepare doctoral candidates for interdisciplinary collaboration in research in Distance Education and eLearning;
  • To contribute to the integration of doctoral candidates in national and international research networks;
  • To promote the transfer of research results, namely through doctoral students' participation in conferences and publication in peer-reviewed international journals.

Application

The conditions of access to the Doctoral Programme in Distance Education and eLearning are the following:

  1. Hold a Master's degree or legal equivalent in any scientific area;
  2. Hold a bachelor's degree and have a scientific, academic or professional curriculum vitae that has been recognized by the Scientific Council of the host University as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.
  3. Hold a foreign higher academic degree whose suitability is recognized by the Scientific Council of the host University.
  4. To hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that has been recognized by the Scientific Council of the Host University as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.

In addition to the access conditions mentioned above, the following are fundamental prerequisites for admission to the Doctoral Programme

  • Digital skills at the level of using, searching, organising and managing information;
  • Mastery of the Portuguese language for adequate development of academic activities;
  • Knowledge of English and Spanish at a level of comprehension.
