These is  a fundamentally theoretical course of conceptual order, emphasizing the great moments of historical developments.
Its main objectives reflect on the size of the artwork as an aesthetic testimony, featuring the main aesthetic currents of Western European art in general and Portuguese Art in particular.
Have a diachronic implications, addressing a paradigmatic analysis of exemplary situations of the greatest moments of historical and artistic evolution.

Ability to distinguish between episodic artistic phenomena and long sustained trends in space and time.
Observation skills, reading and interpretation of the artwork;

General knowledge of the development of different art movements in Europe and Portugal;
Understanding the dynamics of Portuguese Art History as a dialogue between continuities, ruptures and integrations.

The concept of a work of art and reading the work of art within art history
Art and Artists in the Medieval  world. Romanic and Gothic Style
The origin of the Early Modern World. The Renaissance and Mannerism. The Baroque and Rococo
Impressionists and Post-impressionism. The outputs of the twentieth century.
Modernism and the Visual Arts. The avant-garde art and the latest art.

E-learning

The procedures and tools used in this course are consistent with the Pedagogical Model of the UAb, using different activities.
The assessment of this course takes into account the whole student writing throughout the semester production. In the end, the student prepares a work / thesis on a topic of interest related to the course that has a weight of 40% of the total score (corresponding to 8 points). The student must demonstrate the overall acquisition of skills in participation of asynchronous discussions which have a weight of 60 /% (corresponding to 12 values).

Students are required to have access to a computer with Internet broadband connection and e-mail account.
