This course unit places the emergence of the sociology of the family within the Western sociological thought since the 19th century to the present day. Therefore, it provides a broad overview of major sociological perspectives on the family relationship by the major socio-cultural debates that characterize the social structure. It still performs a thorough sociological reflection on the concept of family and its vicissitudes, considering the major changes that occur within a modern family life. It focuses on the profound change undergone by the family in contemporary societies in the context of changes that occurred in the production system and values systems.

• Introducing the main lines of sociological thought, historically located, by relation to the object of study and reflecting on the Sociology of the Family;
• Reflecting critically on the various perspectives presented as well as on the concepts of family;
• Focusing on the family as a phenomenon that is intimately related with other phenomena that make up the structure and social dynamics;
• Reflecting critically on the family mobilizing possible links between the approaches proposed in the literature and those resulting from the students' autonomous and necessary research.
