In this curricular unit we begin by situating the concept of youth analyzing its evolution in a historical and sociological perspective and its relation with other concepts. The notion of transition to adulthood is also analyzed, questioning the limits of youth and its conception based merely on age. After, we consider a number of issues which currently affect youth in western societies, particularly those of Europe and Portugal. We focus particularly on employment, education and training, mobility and civic participation. Lastly, we analyze the guidelines and youth policies promoted at the European and Portuguese levels.

Some of the issues facing youth in western societies and which have been a source of concern by European and National institutions are analyzed. These include employment, mobility, civic participation, and risks specific to this populational group.

Theme 3: Youth policies
