In this curricular unit we begin by situating the concept of youth analyzing its evolution in a historical and sociological perspective and its relation with other concepts. The notion of transition to adulthood is also analyzed, questioning the limits of youth and its conception based merely on age. After, we consider a number of issues which currently affect youth in western societies, particularly those of Europe and Portugal. We focus particularly on employment, education and training, mobility and civic participation. Lastly, we analyze the guidelines and youth policies promoted at the European and Portuguese levels.

1.       To aggregate, analyze and interpret information about educational and social issues pertaining to youth;

2.       To dominate specialized languages pertaining to youth;

3.       To demonstrate critical sense and ethical commitment;

4.       To understand and conceptualize phenomena related to youth;

5.       To understand processes of learning and development of individuals and groups in the youth stage;

6.       To know and evaluate policies, institutions, systems and educational organisms relevant to the educational interventions with youth;

7.       To adequate educational and formative intervention to diverse contexts, issues and target-populations.

Theme 1: Youth concept: referents and scope
In this theme, starting from concepts original to sociology and psychology, the concept of youth and its limits are analyzed, avoiding an essentialist vision. Perspectives about the transition to adulthood and the challenges this transition presents in current western societies, characterized by the prolongment of youth, are considered.

Theme 2: Big issues affecting European and Portuguese Youth
Some of the issues facing youth in western societies and which have been a source of concern by European and National institutions are analyzed. These include employment, mobility, civic participation, and risks specific to this populational group.

Theme 3: Youth policies
The youth policies at the National and European levels are analyzed, stressing the responses given to the issues identified in the previous theme. The role of formative and educational responses to the needs and priorities identified are questioned.
