This course further develops concepts of microbiology, particularly in microbial ecology and the processes of applied microbiology. It focuses on the study of microbial communities in their natural environment, including in water, soil, air, and also animals and plants that inhabit the planet.

It is intended that at the end of this Curricular Unit/Course, students should be able to:
• Demonstrate knowledge of basic methodologies of microbiology;
• Demonstrate knowledge of concepts and microbial processes in environmental microbiology;
• Know the main groups of microorganisms and their function in the environment and in processes of applied microbiology;
• Understand the application of the basic principles of microbiology and ecology to the processes of applied microbiology.

Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a final digital test, Global e-folio (e-folio G) at the end of the semester (60%). In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final exam (100%).
