Portuguese Literature and Culture
Settling between the last quarter of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, this curricular unit seeks to delimit, explain and reflect upon the different meanings and shades of what is commonly designated as Literary Modernity, a multi-significant, multi-faceted and decisive concept in the structuring of the Portuguese intellectual, aesthetic, cultural and literary panorama, considering, however, some of the influences that were received from the European context.

The curricular unit aims to promote in the student the following skills:
- to understand in an articulated way the dynamic relationships existing between texts of a theoretical and programmatic nature and the literary and metaliterary texts that relate to them;
- to be able to interpret and critically reflect, within the scope of the syllabus’ contents, as well as to practice a structured and reasoned form of expression (oral and written);
- to conduct selective and coherent research in order to prepare academic works that combine acquired knowledge, critical reflection and original perspectives.
The curricular unit of Portuguese Literature and Culture intends to reflect, in an articulated way, on the critical and literary production of several authors selected from the last quarter of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, which, paradigmatically, contributed to the philosophy and constitutive values of literary Modernity. The path of aesthetic theorization of the different authors in question will be followed, while accompanying the fictional practices that dialogue with this itinerary, and establishing, at the same time, historical-literary and socio-cultural framing relationships with the relevant 'generations' that they themselves founded and thet their works embody.
