Throughout this course unit and based on the analysis of four historical moments it will be perceived the evolution of military organisation in Portugal and its heritage. The first moment will focus on themes such as: the military power in the formation of Portugal and the stabilisation of territory and borders; the war in the Middle Ages-forces, weapons and organisation; the creation of national forces and the Ferdinand Wars- new tactics and new weapons.

In a second moment, we will consider issues surrounding the Ceuta and Arzila places, as the Empire's war school, analysing the fact that the fortress functioned as a political and military base. We will also analyse the process of widespread use of heavy and light firearms, the military organisation through the law reforms of D. Manuel I and D. Sebastião, and the way some warfare treatises allow us to compare several warfare practices.

In a third moment, we will explain how the War of Restoration made evident new European military typologies as well as understand how military forces became standing forces and a new architecture emerged through the construction of great military buildings. We will also analyse the French invasions and the formation of the Lines of Torres, and explain how the industrial revolution had an impact on the war.

The African campaigns of António Enes and Mouzinho de Albuquerque, the action of the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps in World War I, the way the Portuguese presence in NATO evolved, and the war fought in Africa (1961-1975) are other themes to be discussed.
