This course unit provides students with an approach to the essential aspects of contemporary Portuguese society, from the transition of the Portuguese ancien régime to the Portuguese constitutional monarchy, and also the main factors characterizing the First Republic and the Estado Novo, especially with what pertains to the characteristics and the functioning of the Portuguese social formation at the time. The course unit also aims to transmit and develop a vision and critique of the socio-economic aspects that integrate the Portuguese historical process in this period.

In the end, students are expected to be able to
• distinguish the main contingencies in the demographic, economic and social fields of Portugal in the 19th and 20th centuries;
• develop the analytical and critical capacity of historiographic production in these areas;
• apply the necessary skills for the comprehension of the historical process of contemporary Portuguese society;
• develop capacities in the areas of historical research, sources and methodologies.

Online learning with continuous supervision favoring asynchronous communication (Moodle platform).
Students have to perform the tasks requested by the teacher: essays, critical recensions, reports, protocols, etc. All works will be evaluated and/or classified.

Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 or 3 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a presence-based final exam (p-folio) in the end of the semester (60%).
In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final presence-based exam (100%).

Students are required to have access to a computer with Internet connection and an e-mail address as well as to have computer literacy from the users' perspective.
