This course unit provides students with knowledge on the organization and management theoretical foundations of schools and education, offering them a broad and critical overview of the school as a human and systemic phenomenum. It intends that students understand the relationship between the theoretical foundations of educational organization and management and school reality.

Students are expected to be able to:
• Identify the major theoretical paradigms relevant to the field of School Administration;
• Identify key aspects in this area of knowledge;
• Analyse educational organizations and theirs complexity.

1. The scientific field of Educational Administration and Management, its multidisciplinary nature and its development in the world and in Portugal.
2. The different theoretical perspectives of organizational analysis in schools and the features of educational organizations: the bureaucratic, professional, 'loosely coupled system' logics.
3. The major topics of current research in Educational Management and Administration:
3. 1. Decentralisation and school autonomy.
3. 2. (Macro and micro) adjustment of educational management.
3. 3. School organisational analysis: formal and informal structures; hierarchy, pressure groups, conflict, negotiation, power and culture of the school.
