The curricular unit of Law of the European Union aims at studying three fundamental issues: the European Union (since the foundation of the initial European Communities until the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon); bodies and institutions of the European Union; the substantive law of the European Union (with the selection of relevant topics of the European integration process: European citizenship, the protection of fundamental rights). The learning process will have a strong theoretical and practical component aimed at student participation in activities and their introduction to research practices.

Students should be able to:
 Model, by reference to concrete situations, the current regulatory and institutional framework of the European Union;
 Provide and review the types of relationships existing between the national laws and European Union law, as well as between the national government bodies of the European Union bodies;
 Participate actively and critically in the process of European integration.
Students should also specifically be able to: - Describe the historical process of the EU; - Identify the key moments of the construction of the EU; - Distinguish the general method of integration of the method of functional integration; - Reflect on the developments in the EU over time and, in particular, in future times;
- Characterize the way the EU is structured; - Indicate the main objectives of the European Union; - List the basic principles of the EU; - Identify the essential features of the Treaty of European Union, considering the amendments of the Lisbon Treaty; - Characterize the mechanism for “enhanced cooperation”; - Describe the essentials of European citizenship; - Explain the relationship between European citizenship and national citizenship; - Characterize EU law on fundamental rights and indicate the respective sources; - Characterize the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union; - Explain the relationship between the European Convention on Human Rights and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union; - To discuss the legal value of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of European Union; - Indicate the objectives and main competences of the EU; - Characterize the system of division of powers between the EU and the Member States; - Characterize the EU's institutional system; - Distinguish EU bodies and indicate the respective powers; - Define the concept of EU law; - Explain the existence of the EU law as a branch of law (in progress); - Indicate the main sources of EU law; - Describe the relationship between the various sources of European law; - Distinguish the different processes of adoption of normative acts; - Identify the relations between EU law and national laws (in progress); - Explain the process of reception of EU law by the Portuguese legal system; - Characterize the principle of primacy of EU law over national law; - Explain the implications of the principle of primacy in Portuguese law; - Characterize the principle of direct applicability of EU law; - Characterize the principle of direct effect of EU law;
- Distinguish vertical direct effect from horizontal direct effect; - Characterize the principle of harmonization of national laws; - Indicate the type of participation of the Portuguese state bodies in European legal and political processes.

Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a final digital test, Global e-folio (e-folio G) at the end of the semester (60%). In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final exam (100%).
