Jews played an important economic, social and cultural role in the history of the Iberian kingdoms and they established a relationship with the society and the royalty with specific characteristics, marked by constant appeals of the royal power to convert the Jewish population to Christianity. Many Jews eventually give in to such pressure or they were forced to receive baptism, thus becoming an integral part of modern society, under the designation of New Christians, perpetuating and expanding the important role that their ancestors had played in the peninsular kingdoms. From the beginning, the Jews' conversion process proved to be few consistent and it was a factor of destabilization in the peninsular kingdoms, taking the royal power to request from Rome the establishment of the Inquisition in their kingdoms in order to root out 'heretical behaviors' of  New Christians, which had important impact in the life of the New Christian population.
