This master's degree is aimed at professionals and researchers in the biosciences who explore statistical and mathematical methodologies with interdisciplinary interests and responsibilities, in particular professionals in the fields of Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Health Sciences and Technologies, Medicine; as well as other technical careers in Health; Biology, Physics, and Psychology with a particular emphasis on Health Psychology; Higher Education researchers and teachers in the indicated areas; Mathematics, Biology and ICT teachers in primary and secondary education; young graduates with career prospects in these areas; alongside any individual wishing to broaden their knowledge in these areas.

Entry Requirements:

Who can apply for master 's degree in Biostatistics and Biometry

  • the holders of a degree or legal equivalent in the following scientific disciplines: Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems and Technology, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Agricultural Sciences and related fields;
  • the holders of an academic degree obtained abroad in the scientific areas of Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems and Technology, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Agricultural Sciences and related fields that is recognized by the Scientific Council of the Portuguese Open University (Universidade Aberta);
  • the holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized by the Scientific Council of the Portuguese Open University as meeting the goals and skills necessary to complete this course.

Language of Instruction: Portuguese.
Teaching Mode: Distance learning, in the form of virtual classroom (teaching online using the e-learning platform of UAb).
The language of instruction is mainly Portuguese, however some units will have also offer tuition in Spanish.

 

This masters degree is recognized for career progress purposes in groups 230 e 500 of basic and secondary education teachers (according to article 54 of ECD).

Curricular estructure:

The cycle of studies leading to master 's degree makes a total of 120 credit units (ECTS) with a duration of two academic years.
The first year is divided into two semesters totaling 60 ECTS units.

In optional credits, students must choose one study unit from each of the following scientific areas: Statistics, Mathematics and Computer Engineering. The remaining optional credits can be freely chosen from any area.

It is awarded a Post-graduate certificate to the student who completes the academic part of the master.
The second year is devoted  to carrying out a dissertation or a work placement and respective report worth a total of 60 ECTS. In terms of overall work, each unit ECTS equals 26 hours of student work.
