This course unit introduces the fundamental concepts, tools and variables in land-use management that can be used in managing for sustainability. It also aims to show that land-use management and environment are complementary and should act simultaneously as joint actions, not interchangeable and even less antagonistic or conflicting. Special emphasis is placed on planning instruments that take the long-term view to sustainability, natural hazards as a key factor in the planning process and the process of public participation in land-use management.
