In a networked world, issues associated with computer security are of extreme importance. It is interesting to train professionals capable of dealing with the problem of the various aspects of computer security, creating skills for the project and the implementation of sufficient mechanisms to deal with the different threats. It is therefore important to present the central concepts of computer security, with a focus on network and computer security.

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to:
1. Recognize the importance of computer security in the current context of the information society;
2. Master the central concepts related to computer security;
3. Architect and implement efficient mechanisms to deal with the main threats to computer security (computers and networks).

1. Introduction to Computer Security: Issues, Definitions, Standards.
2. Cryptography: Conventional principles and algorithms, Symmetric principles and algorithms, Asymmetric principles and algorithms, Public key systems and message authentication.
3. Authentication and Identification: Applications: Kerberos, X509, Password systems, Biometric systems.
4. Security in network services: E-mail, IP, WWW, SNMP.
5. Security in computer systems: Intrusions and viruses, Firewalls.
6. Security policies and computer auditing.

E-learning

Evaluation is made on individual basis and it involves the coexistence of two modes: continuous assessment (60%) and final evaluation (40%). Further information is detailed in the Learning Agreement of the course unit.

The students are supposed to be proficient in Portuguese language and also in English language at reading level.
