Portuguese Literature II
Courses
Students are expected to be able
•to acquire knowledge on different aesthetic and doctrinary senses that in a diachronic perspective frame Portuguese literature of this period and to relate them;
•to develop reading, analysis and interpretation competences for commenting critically the main texts/authors of a given period;
•to apply the acquired knowledge in the development of literary book reviews.
This course unit studies the key themes offered by the Coursebook on Portuguese classical literature edited by Universidade Aberta, by analysing a selection of texts which identify and represent the work of the authors considered.
Different aesthetic and literary profiles that feature the literary productions of Gil Vicente and Bernardim Ribeiro are compared.
Poetic and doctrinary values introduced by the works of Sá de Miranda and António Ferreira are also identified and analysed, along with a refelction on 'travel' and 'disaster' literatures, relating contexts and contents.
The work of Camões is approached from a global perspective, privileging the lyric over the epic.
The reflection on the literary times representative of Mannerism and Baroque intends to demonstrate the richness and variety of aesthetic and conceptual universes of that period.
In the 18th century, through the analysis of the Enlightenment reflections, it is evident the renewal performed by the Arcadia Lusitana and the aesthetic and ideological innovation brought by some of its members, focusing on the contribution the poems of Bocage and Marquesa de Alorna brought to the national literary panorama as precursors of the new aesthetic and romantic sensibility.
