This curricular unit finishes the Latin elementary level and may be continued in further levels. The lessons propose an active work and commitment and are developed to answer to a progressive difficulty level.
Students will be introduced to basic vocabulary and grammatical notions towards the reading of small texts in original Latin (Phaedrus, Eutropius, Higinus, Apuleius).
Secondary bibliography provides information on Roman civilization, Classical culture, mainly some literary aspects about the origins to the late Republic (a full reading of a Plautus’ work may be asked).

- Understand the basic structures of Latin grammar (declension of nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and verbal conjugation in all moods, active, passive, and deponent);
- Recognize elementary vocabulary;
- Establish lexical relations between Latin and Portuguese;
- Recognize the authors and literary works from the origins to the late Republic (Sula’s age);
- Use grammar knowledge in other texts.

I. Grammar
1. Subordination
1.1 Adjective clauses (relative with indicative)
1.2 Substantive clauses (infinitive, indirect questions and completive);
1.3 Adverbial clauses (time and cause).
2. Verb
2.1 Nominal and adjectival forms of the verb: infinitive, participle, gerundive, supine;
2.2 Passive imperative;
2.3 Active voice: perfect and pluperfect subjunctive;
2.4 Passive voice: indicative and subjunctive moods; syntax of passive voice.
2.5 Deponent verbs.
3. Pronouns
3.1 Demonstratives (hic, iste, ille, is, idem, ipse)
3.2 Relative
3.3 Interrogative
4. Adverbs
4.1 Relatives
4.2 Interrogatives
4.3 Mood (morphology and syntax)
5. Direct question and exclamation.
6. Interjections.

Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 or 3 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a presence-based final exam (p-folio) in the end of the semester (60%).
In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final presence-based exam (100%).
