This course unit applies the theoretical knowledge acquired in Introduction to Literary Studies I. The in-depth study of two works of different literary genres and its relationship with the literary period in which they are located, in its literary, historical and cultural aspects, are the main issues addressed in this course unit.

  1. Modern and Contemporary Literature
  2. Literary analysis
  3. Poetry
  4. Short novel

Students are expected to be able
• to place certain literary works within the context of evolution and literary periodization and to recognize their specific features or their subversion;
• to analyze and interpret a literary work.

• Fernando Pessoa/Álvaro Campos: faces and masks of Portuguese Modernism.
Contos Exemplares by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen or in Search for the Absolute.

Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 or 3 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a presence-based final exam (p-folio) in the end of the semester (60%).
In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final presence-based exam (100%).

To enroll in this course unit, students must have successfully completed the Introduction to Literary Studies I.
Students are required to master Portuguese language.
