This course unit provides a general approach and brief history of photography in Portugal between 1839 and 1991.

• Recognizing the key moments in the history of photography in Portugal.
• Identifying some of the key photographers who worked in Portugal and their works.
• Knowing some technical terms related to photography over the years.

• The first reports published in Portugal about the invention of photography and pioneer photographers.
• The photographic activity between 1880 and 1910.
• The 'Estado Novo', the "worried looks", issues and researches.

Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a final digital test, Global e-folio (e-folio G) at the end of the semester (60%). In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final exam (100%).

Students are required to have access to a computer with Internet connection and an e-mail address as well as to have computer literacy from the users' perspective.
