This curricular unit aims to frame the ethics applied in the field of informatics engineering. To identify and apply aspects of computational ethics, analyze these problems in the field of Informatics engineering, as well as identifying, analysing and applying the ethical code of Ethics of ACM/IEEE and the Order of engineers, are some of the goals of this curricular unit.

This course unit (CU) develops the competences C1, C6, C7, C8 and C9 of the Informatics Engineering degree profile:

  • Analyse, model, and specify complex problems, clearly identifying the reality and the needs to be addressed in order to enable the development of value-added solutions.
  • Communicate, collaborate, and lead projects with clarity and effectiveness, producing high-quality technical documentation and working within multidisciplinary teams in both face-to-face and virtual environments.
  • Act ethically and socially responsibly in technological contexts, recognising the impact of solutions on society and promoting inclusive and sustainable practices.
  • Learn autonomously and continuously new technologies, methodologies, and tools, demonstrating the ability for constant updating and adaptation to diverse technological and professional contexts.
  • Integrate and apply tools from fields such as mathematics, physics, engineering, and social and human sciences in the resolution of real-world challenges.

Within this CU, specific competences aligned with the above are also developed:

  • Contextualise applied ethics within informatics engineering.
  • Identify and apply aspects of computer ethics.
  • Analyse ethical problems related to the practice of informatics engineering.
  • Identify, analyse, and apply the ACM/IEEE and the Portuguese Engineers Association code of ethics and professional conduct.

All teaching and learning activities in this CU are conducted online, in a virtual classroom environment, with emphasis on asynchronous communication.
The learning process combines both independent and collaborative components, requiring students to engage in structured work based on the materials provided, as well as in planned moments of diverse interaction, both within the class group and between students and the professor.

Assessment in this CU can be carried out in two modes:

  • Continuous Assessment – through specific activities for each module.
  • Examination – available only in the resit period.
