The course Social Policy aims to introduce the students to the main foundations of social policy, understood as the public intervention designed to promote and guarantee the welfare, a constitutive trait of modern welfare states. It presents and discusses the theoretical and normative principles underlying state intervention and analyzes social policy within the framework of the evolution of the modern welfare state, with particular emphasis on the analysis of different models and welfare state regimes. Therefore, the aim is to present the theoretical bases that support the analysis of the relationship between state and society in the field of social policies, highlighting ist normative dimensions and the complexity that frames political decision-making and action.

Identify and discuss different conceptions and dimensions of Social Policy as a public policy;
Identify the origins and forms of action of the Welfare State;
Characterize and discuss the system of welfare-mix;
Identify and discuss theories about the Welfare State and its diversity of regimes; ·
Identify and analyze Social Policy normative foundations;
Identify and analyze Social Policy economic foundations: the pensions systems
Identify and discuss the forms of action of European social policy;
Reflect on the challenges of social policies and the Welfare state in contemporary societies





 

This curricular unit will deal with the following themes:
•    1. Social Policy within public policies context
•    2. The origins and evolution of Welfare State
•    3. Plurality of the actors in the Welfare State: the welfare-mix
•    4. Diversity of Welfare State regimes
•    5. Normative foundations of Social Policy
•    6. Economic foundations of Social Policy

Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a final digital test, Global e-folio (e-folio G) at the end of the semester (60%). In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final exam (100%).
