This course unit provides a general perspective of the history of European integration from 1945 to the present day. It analyses the historical foundations of the highly political and economic process of the project of European integration, as it was conceptualized by its founders in the 1950s. It also takes a closer look at the process of integration, from the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) to the European Economic Community (EEC), and finally, the European Union (EU), the successive enlargements, and the debates about EU borders and European identity. Besides, the course unit will also focus on such issues as political organization and the institutions that have structured the EU based on the various treaties and agreements among member-states.

• explain the foundations and the historical process of European integration and explain how political and institutional organization have evolved;
• critically reflect on fundamental documents and debates on European integration;
• use adequate concepts and vocabulary for critical analysis of the topics;
• critically discuss points of views with respect to the question of European identity and citizenship.
- Explicar os fundamentos e o processo histórico da construção europeia, designadamente o modo como tem evoluído em termos de organização política e institucional;
- Elaborar reflexão crítica em torno de documentos e de debates fundamentais sobre a construção europeia;
- Analisar criticamente a evolução da identidade e da cidadania europeias, fundamentando diferentes perspectivas;
- Discutir criticamente a evolução e perspetivas sobre a problemática da construção europeia;
- Utilizar conceitos e vocabulário adequados à análise histórica dos temas da construção, da identidade e da cidadania europeias;
- Produzir textos académicos, historicamente fundamentados e devidamente estruturados, sobre os temas da identidade, da cidadania e da construção europeias;
- Interpretar e utilizar criticamente mapas, gráficos, cronologias e outra informação visual na análise histórica dos temas da identidade, da cidadania e da construção europeias.

Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a final digital test, Global e-folio (e-folio G) at the end of the semester (60%). In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final exam (100%).
