This course aims to provide the fundamental elements for understanding global business and the context of globalization in which companies, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), operate.

First, globalization will be defined as a process, along with the characterization of its various dimensions. The critical debate around globalization and the dominant perspectives—often not grounded in rigorous data—will also be addressed. Part of this reflection is based on the contributions of critical management studies.

The course will further explore the implications of the different dimensions of globalization—economic, cultural, political, social, and managerial—for companies, highlighting how they influence business practices. Core topics such as risk and uncertainty in international trade, the opportunities and challenges of business internationalization, as well as the complexity and sustainability of commercial activities in a global perspective, will also be analyzed.

The preferred assessment regime is continuous assessment, consisting of two e-folios (written assignments in digital format) carried out during the semester, and one final assessment moment — the Global e-folio (e-fólioG) — taking place at the end of the semester. These components account for 40% and 60% of the final grade, respectively.

Students may, however, choose, within the established deadlines, to be assessed through a single examination moment, by taking a Final Assessment test (exam), which accounts for 100% of the final grade.
