This PhD aims to qualify professionals in advanced studies in the area of sustainable development, especially the environmental and socio-economic aspects. Its main targets are all those who wish to develop advanced research in this area of study, especially those linked to the tertiary and public sectors, to education and training, staff from companies and international organisations working in development and social responsibility and as well as researchers.

The training purposes are:

• Deepening knowledge in the field of Sustainable Development, through the use of a current and interdisciplinary theory.

• The development of analytical skills, assessment and critical reflection on concrete situations in the area of Sustainability and Development.

• The development of capacities and competences to carry out research independently in the area of Sustainability and Development.

• The development of skills and competences to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and social and cultural progress within the scope of each mentioned specialty.

Holders of a master's degree or legal equivalent in any field of knowledge;

Holder of a bachelor's degree and of an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum that is recognized as attesting the ability to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council;

Holder of an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum, which has been recognized by the Scientific Council of Universidade Aberta as attesting the ability to carry out this cycle of studies.

The 1st part of the PhD is taught in a distance learning regime (online), using the e-learning platform in use at Universidade Aberta. The 1st semester is anticipated by an 2 weeks initial virtual module, with the aim of introducing students to both the University's virtual pedagogical model and the characteristics of the online teaching context of this PhD, as well as to the elearning required for attendance. The 2nd part of the PhD is fundamentally dedicated to research. The presentation and discussion of the doctoral thesis are carried out in a public session, specially convened for this purpose.

Doctoral students throughout their study in the Doctoral Program in Social Sustainability and Development are encouraged to present their research within the scope of the thesis at international scientific conferences, to be reflected in the evaluation of the UC Project Seminar.

The Doctoral Program in Social Sustainability and Development has an External Advisory Committee and a Scientific Committee.

The Doctoral degree in Social Sustainability and Development is taught in partnership between the Science and Technology Department and the Social Sciences and Management Department.

There is also an external partnership with the Center for Sustainable Development of the University of Brasília for the organization of the annual doctoral seminar.

In terms of the development of thesis, doctoral students are encouraged to be integrated into the Research Centers where their supervisors belong, accredited by the Foundation for Science and Technology.

Curricular estructure:

1st part (curricular units) - 60 ECTS

2nd part (research) - 120 ECTS

The maximum duration of the Doctoral Program in Social Sustainability and Development is 3 years for the full-time student. In the case of part-time students, the maximum duration of this Doctoral Program is 5 years. The first 2 years are occupied with the frequency of Curricular Units.

Doctoral students who opted for the part-time regime must register in the second semester (first year) in a Advanced Theoretical Seminar II and in Advanced Methodological Seminar II, and in the fourth semester (second year) in a Project Seminar.
