This curricular unit presents a program that is organized in two blocks, the first corresponding to the presentation of the general bases that allow an initiation to Paleography and Diplomatics and the second to the consolidation of the practice of paleographic reading and deepening of knowledge in diplomatics and text editing.
Paleography and Diplomatic
At the end of this curricular unit, the student should have developed the following skills:
- Mastery of the practice of paleographic reading of manuscripts;
- Ability to transcribe a document and prepare its complete summary;
- Ability to identify the terminology of graphic styles;
- Ability to identify and solve the main problems related to the editing of a manuscript (original/copy);
- Mastery of the main stages of document processing from the writer to the addresee.

1- Paleography and Diplomatics: concepts and bibliographic resources
2- The materiality of the text: production, use and conservation
3- The design of the letters
4- Abbreviations and signs
5- Numbers and name
6- Dating and document validation
7- Diplomatic content: protocol, text, eschatocol
8- Typologies of writing
9- Transcription and editing of documents: conventions; preparation of summaries
Block B -
1. Paleography:
1.1. Reading and transcription of documentation from the 13th-14th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th-19th centuries; -1.2. Identification of graphic styles.
2. Diplomatics: genesis and document processing.
3. Text editing: main issues.

Continuous assessment is privileged: 2 digital written documents (e-folios) during the semester (40%) and a final digital test, Global e-folio (e-folio G) at the end of the semester (60%). In due time, students can alternatively choose to perform one final exam (100%).
