Throughout its history, Portugal was a place of passage or settlement of various peoples and many of them left us important testimonies of their presence, as was the case of the Jews. It was from the Middle Ages onwards that the presence of the Jewish population, in Portugal, became more visible and relevant During this time the Portuguese Jews, enjoyed a climate of general tolerance towards them which allowed him to thrive. However, at the end of the 14th century, during the reign of D. Manuel, this situation underwent profound changes, when the monarch determined the forced baptism of the entire Jewish population. The pressure, from the part of the established powers - Church and monarchy - on these new elements of Portuguese society, called New Christians, increased over the years, as them were accused of not left behind their old faith and endanger the religious and social unity of the Portuguese monarchy. To try to eradicate this problem, D. João III asked Rome to establish the Inquisition in Portugal, which had a significant impact in New Christian’s life. Inside or outside of Portugal the Jews/New Christians were an important part of a history that is ours and that they helped to shape.

It is expected Master's students acquire/develop the follow competencies: critically reflect about the meaning of the new Christian presence in Modern society, in Portugal and outside it, as well as on the relations between the new Christians and the royal and religious power, in the 16th-17th centuries; carry out research work in a critical and autonomous way on the issues addressed in the curricular unit; discuss and produce scientific work collaboratively.

Students’ evaluation is made on individual basis and it involves the coexistence of two modes: continuous assessment (60%) and final evaluation (40%). Further information is detailed in the Learning Agreement of the course unit.
It is recommended that students have knowledge of Spanish and French in terms of reading.
